Culinary Sightseeing in Regina - Teppanyaki Japanese Steak House

Last night Jason and I went on a dinner date to Teppanyaki Japanese Steak House with our friends Breann and Joel. I had never been there before, it was Jason's third time and Breann and Joel had gone to one in Las Vegas.

We watched the chef put on his show for the group before us as we sipped our drinks and chatted a little. Breann mentioned that they had started compiling a list of restaurants they wanted to try in Regina and asked if we wanted to have a standing dinner date with them once a month and try out all the different restaurants. Of course! Jason and I love this sort of thing. Granted Jason's taste buds are a little more seasoned and willing than mine, but he gets super proud of me when I am willing to try new foods, dishes and ingredients.

Us girls were into our second Hawaiian Sunrises and the boys ordered another drink when we started getting our appetizers. (I tried Breann's sushi roll, and liked it). By this time we had negotiated the terms of our new Culinary Dates. We were going to shoot for going out twice a month - some times to new restaurants that we wanted to try and sometimes cooking for one another. The cooking for each other aspect is awesome because both Breann and Joel went to the Art Institute of Las Vegas. Breann studied in Food & Beverage Management and Joel the Culinary Arts, so basically they are both trained chefs. Jason is a little intimidated by this because he usually does all the cooking for us, but Joel said as long as we didn't feed him and PB&J sandwiches we were good to go!

Our chef turned his attention to us as we ordered another round of drinks, OK, well just me and Breann did, and started the show. His utensil flipping skills were good and he was super nice and funny. The food hit the searing hot flat top and our mouths were already watering.

He started off by making the awesome flaming onion volcanoes. (Jason really likes these). And of course I liked them. Anything that gets lit on fire, instantly has my attention. Breann made a comment about my liking fire so much. Come on, Breann! Really? We've been friends since high school, you know I'm a bit of a pyro. Ha!

Creepy guy in this photo was some other customer, not one of us.

Breann and Joel both ordered the Sakura Special which includes both chicken and steak. Jason ordered the Ichiban Special which was a combination of shrimp, lobster tail and scallops. (You can see the lobster tail shell curled up at the side of the grill in the picture above). And I ordered the teriyaki chicken dish.

Our chef squeezed lemon juice over Jason's seafood and then lit it all on fire again! The flames were so warm sitting right next to the flat top.

The knife that the chef used was obviously very sharp because he was cutting through the steak and chicken with the ease of a hot knife through butter. And every time he put it away in the sheath attached to his belt, he would flourish it around in his hand. Breann was positive that before the night was over she might get stabbed by a flying knife the way he was swinging it around. But alas, she walked out of there with out a scratch. Ha ha.

The food we were served up in such epic fashion was absolutely delicious. In the words of Breann: "It was sexiness in her mouth." We all enjoyed it. I discovered that I like bean sprouts and scallops! Jason was really excited about the me liking scallops epiphany. But of course, he teased me about being inept with chopsticks. The package had the instructions right on them. I still didn't use them. Fork for me.

Another order our chef lit on fire.

More onion volcano!

Ordering dessert was fun - we all wanted deep fried ice cream! When the waitress came around to take our dessert requests, she talked us into two orders of deep-fried ice cream and two orders of deep-fried bananas with ice cream. Both were delicious. I preferred the bananas dish over the other. But both were the perfect end to a wonderful and entertaining meal.

After the success of last night and the instituting of our Culinary Dates, I have decided that each time we go out I am going to document the experience on my blog. Photos, commentary and all. I think it will be fun! Plus it'll be new places and new foods with great company. I will of course update my blog with other posts as well, heck, I still need to post about Mexico and I've been home for almost a month already. Need to get on that!

Our next Culinary Date is set for Monday, February 18th at the Knotted Thistle Pub, one of Jason's favourite places, but one that Breann and Joel haven't experienced.

Stay tuned!
